Saddle up for Australia’s most famous rodeo

The largest rodeo event in the Southern Hemisphere, the 2009 Xstrata Mount Isa Rotary Rodeo returns for its 51st year culminating in three days of thrilling bronc and bull arena action from August 7 to 9.

During rodeo week which kicks off Wednesday, August 5, Mount Isa’s 20,000-strong population almost triples with travellers from around Australia and overseas heading to the Isa to witness the adrenalin-pumping thrills and entertainment of one of the world’s best rodeos. So special in fact, it’s just been named an official Queensland Icon – in a list of Q150 icons released by the Queensland Government.

Local, interstate and international competitors will compete for a prize pool of more than $200,000 in the Kalkadoon Stadium at the purpose-built Buchanan Park complex in events including saddle bronc riding, bareback bronc riding, bull riding, rope & tie, steer wrestling and team roping. Away from the ring the fun continues with social events including Mardi Gras, Rodeo Queen Quest and Bull Pit. The entertainment line-up includes internationally-acclaimed rock band Hoodoo Gurus and country music star Beccy Cole. Mount Isa is celebrating its 85th anniversary this year. www.isarodeo.com.au
