Discover the culture and history of Mungalla Station and its owners, the Nywaigi Aboriginal traditional owners of the lands around Ingham in north Queensland.
This is an authentic indigenous tour includes the opportunity to explore the property established by James Cassady, who fled the potato famine of Ireland and created a pastoral dynasty. The tour begins at the grand Mungalla Station homestead where you are introduced to Nywaigi Aboriginal culture. Here you can view ancient artefacts and try throwing a boomerang or spear. Next visit the original homestead site and learn more about James Cassady and his family, the first European settlers on Mungalla. Then it’s back to the Grand Mungalla Homestead to view the award-winning Captive Lives Exhibition that tells the unique but sad story of how Aboriginal people were taken overseas and exhibited as boomerang throwing cannibals and seen by over 27 million people throughout America and Europe. The tour concludes with a cup of tea and a yarn (talk) with the Aboriginal storytellers around the homestead yards overlooking beautiful Palm Creek. Country-style BBQs and the "kup-murri" (an underground cooking experience not to be missed) can be organised for groups of 10 or more. www.mungallaaboriginaltours.com.au
